Ainsworth, Nebraska
Ainsworth, county seat of Brown County, is located in the north-central part of Nebraska, approximately 267 miles from Omaha, NE; 400 miles from Denver, CO; and 200 miles from Sioux City, IA. Its population is approximately 2,000. Ainsworth is named for Captain James E. Ainsworth, chief construction engineer of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad, who arrived at the town site in June 1882. Pioneers were pushing west, setting up shops and businesses. Many also were filing for homesteads on the freeland, claiming 160 acres under provisions that certain improvements be made. Ainsworth was incorporated as a village on December 2, 1883. By 1885 the town covered nearly 30 blocks, and Main Street was crowded with shops. Today, Ainsworth is the home of many businesses and is a major trade center for the surrounding area. Ainsworth's economy is primarily agriculture oriented. Merritt Dam, 72 miles from Ainsworth, was dedicated in 1964. It provides irrigation to 34,500 acres of farmland north and east of town. Several small industries stimulate the economy and provide jobs for a number of people. The Municipal Airport hosts two concrete runways. Ainsworth has many places to eat, lodging, and service stations located in the heart of some of the finest deer, turkey, duck, grouse, and pheasant hunting in the state. There are numerous Sandhill lakes, ponds, and trout streams with great fishing, canoeing, tubing, and camping available. To the south and west of town are the beautiful Sandhills, covered with many different grasses, wild flowers and shrubs. To the north, canoeing the Niobrara River is a popular summer activity. The Ainsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, North Central Development Center, Ainsworth Community School District, Ainsworth Public Library, and Brown County Hospital are a few of the many organizations that work hard to keep Ainsworth and Brown County viable and growing.
Chadron, Nebraska
Chadron, the county seat of Dawes County, is located in Northwestern Nebraska. Served by U.S. Highways 20 and 385, Chadron is 100 miles south of Rapid City, South Dakota; 300 miles northeast of Denver, Colorado; and 450 miles northwest of Omaha, Nebraska. Its population is near 5,500. Chadron is named for Louis B. Chartran, a manager of a fur trading post built in 1841 near what are now the city reservoirs south of town. The creek running nearby is named on early maps as Chartran's Creek. The name was pronounced by French settlers as "shattron," and the pronunciation evolved into Chadron. Dawes County is an agricultural county nestled in the scenic Pine Ridge area. The county seat of Chadron is a community with a diverse economy. This strategically isolated community, located at the southern entrance to the Black Hills, is a mecca for visitors to enjoy diverse outdoor amenities as well as world class pre-history, early-American and Old West attractions. Chadron is a balanced rural community with quality health care, exceptional telecommunications infrastructure and transportation access via two major US highways.
